Women and Children First
To live in poverty that is. Recent Colorado numbers from the census bureau are not suprising, but continue to illustrate the need for systemic changes in employment, education and family planning. Read more here.
I was at a conference on political involvement in Portland recently. One of participants said that both she and her husband were self-employed, and as their income had gone up, the amount of tax that they paid had gone down. She became politically active when she realized that she was paying less taxes than her friends who made less money. This violated her sense of fairness.
If you live a certain way in the US, the government subsidizes you. This is in contrast to most industrialized nations which provide a basic standard of living, but if you want anything more than that, you have to work for it.
