  1. Reframe the discussion on in and about poverty.

Cutting poverty in half in ten years? Can it be done? Who is responsible for poverty in the first place? What are the root cause(s) of poverty? Who benefits from poverty? Why is this happening? Why put money into this massive project, even in America it is a massive project?

Do something about the systems that sustain and maintain poverty.

  2. Great meeting. Our small group was poignantly named "Invisible" as poverty can seem invisible on the media, to our employers, or as an issue. One person mentioned that elected officials tend to listen to property owners, but who speaks for renters?

Some suggestions: Create a visible voting bloc on poverty, have individuals living in poverty as part of decisionmaking, advocacy training, making a "business case" for reducing poverty, call people on "blaming the victim", and holding policy makers accountable. One jokingly suggested "Pay for Performance" for legislators based on the goal on reducing poverty in half.
